Deanna Minich, PhD, author of Whole Detox

“This book is a grand tour of many key factors in chronic Lyme and pro- vides readers a road map to wellness. I agree with the author that this book will ‘guide, inspire, and empower’ you on your healing path. By following the recommendations here, you will help your immune system regain its strength and greatly aid in your recovery.”

Sunjya Schweig, MD, CEO and codirector, California Center for Functional Medicine

“In this book, nutritional strategies and health supporting action steps are cor- nerstones for treating Lyme disease and related coinfections. The author, in addition, astutely enhances this mind-body approach by relating mold sensi- tivity; viral, fungal, and yeast challenges; fatigue; environmental toxicity; and emotional stress as integrating factors to the illness dynamics. Individuals who have been sick for some time will appreciate this information and physi- cians can consider it an excellent resource for treating their patients.”

Morton M. Teich, MD, past president, American Academy of Environmental Medicine; asthma and immunology fellow, American Academy of Allergy; committee-member, Adverse Reactions to Foods; instructor, Icahn Medical School of Mt. Sinai-Clinical

An excerpt from ‘NOURISH, HEAL, THRIVE : A comprehensive and holistic approach to living with Lyme disease:

“Drainage and Detoxification

  •
How well can your body get rid of toxins? Did you have chemical sensitivities before you were infected with Lyme? Or did you exhibit skin problems, have environmental allergies, or experience headaches in certain situations (e.g., when you were at a gas station)? These symptoms indicate underlying detox weaknesses that are exacerbated by the Lyme infection and mold exposures. The

Lyme infection and toxic exposures could have triggered a cascade of chemical sensitivity because of an already compromised immune system.

An individual’s ability to detox is a major factor in how the body handles the burden of Lyme and coinfections and how it responds to therapeutic interventions when dealing with vector-borne infections, viruses, or mold illness. This must be seen in context with the onslaught of factory-produced toxic pollution in our air, food supply, soil, oceans, and rainwater. All of these toxins can accumulate in the body, and, thus, we must be proactive in helping our bodies to get rid of them. If toxins are not eliminated, they build up, which can cause or contribute to Lyme-like symptoms such as palpitations, joint pain, skin eruptions, or headaches. The kidneys and liver are both major elimination channels; however, we must also include the skin, colon, lungs, and lymph as important detoxification pathways. If one channel is clogged, the body will attempt to use other channels. It is not just infections that create health problems; it is also the accumulated chemical toxins from the environment that trigger low-grade and sustained inflammation, which keeps us sick.

With any type of antimicrobial therapeutic treatment, die-off poisons from the microbes are released into the body. These toxins, if not metabolized and eliminated efficiently, create debilitating symptoms, or a herx reaction. Think of it like a clogged pipe under the kitchen or bathroom sink that eventually results in a messy overflow because it does not drain properly. When toxins build up in the body because of lack of drainage, there is a similar reaction. Toxins are reabsorbed and end up in the bloodstream, and the reaction can be so severe that therapeutic treatment must be discontinued. Lymph drainage supporters and binding agents help suck up toxins like a sponge sucks up water. Skin reactions, severe headaches, insomnia, increased pain, nausea, flu-like symptoms, and severe fatigue are common when toxins are not properly eliminated; in severe cases involving anaphylaxis, hospitalization is required. These are symptoms of autointoxication. Whether you’re in active treatment or not, it is essential to sup- port the drainage of the lymph fluid between cells where infections and toxins accumulate. No therapeutic treatment should be implemented without first introducing drainage and detoxification into the protocol.”
